The Journal of Contemplative Studies (JCS) is a peer-reviewed academic open access digital journal published by the Contemplative Sciences Center at the University of Virginia. The journal publishes original research and scholarship on issues and topics related to the world’s contemplative practice traditions. The focus of the journal is humanistic studies on contemplation, but we encourage interdisciplinary scholarship as long as there is a deep humanistic core. The mission of the journal is to provide an academic venue for supporting innovative scholarship on contemplation as well as promoting interconnections across disciplines, perspectives, and traditions.
Focus and Scope While the focus of the journal is humanistic studies on contemplation, the editors encourage interdisciplinary scholarly collaborations with a humanistic core. The editors invite interdisciplinary collaborative studies across the contemplative arts, humanities, sciences and technology, and welcomes submissions that reflect multi- and trans-disciplinary approaches. However, the journal does not accept article submissions that are single method empirical studies, meta-analyses, and similar scientific reviews. The journal is also not intended for articles that simply present a contemplative intervention or a program for applied contemplative practices, as might be found in the context of contemplative pedagogy or clinical practice. An example of an article that is not encouraged would be a summary of a new mindfulness-based intervention for use in schools or the workplace. In contrast, an article that looks at mindfulness-based interventions under the lens of some scholarly perspective, such as cultural history, would be welcome.

Publication CycleThe rolling-volume publishing model enables authors to submit their papers when ready to be reviewed, and a streamlined workflow of the editorial and peer-review processes that leads to an increased speed of publication. Papers are published on a rolling paper-by-paper basis and are not reliant on the publication timetable of a larger collated journal issue, but rather on the frequency of paper submissions and editorial workflow. Each paper is treated on its own publication timeline to meet scholarly criteria of peer-review, incorporate author revisions, and finalize typesetting and editing for the digital publication. The JCS also publishes special thematic issues that are invited or approved by the editors.
